Port of Seattle

Port of Seattle

This last year has involved many transitions and lots of traveling for me.  I love to travel, it nourishes my art practice and soul, stimulating the creative parts of my mind.  Recent travel has not been for pleasure but family business, and for the first time in my life I am nearing the status of commuter.  That being said I still find many moments in the process of moving, of traveling, that are captivating.  I’m fascinated by the early morning ferries in Washington State, the morning commuters in their routines of getting ready for work on a vessel moving 18 knots across the Puget Sound.  Ports, in general, fascinate me as well, the Port of Seattle in particular.  The huge cranes and freighters, the distant bustle of many people working to unload and load freight as fast as possible on vessels that dwarf buildings.  This particular morning I had an early flight out of Sea-Tac.  There was a storm moving in from the west, pushing across the Olympic Peninsula into Seattle, a system of heavy rain clouds moving across a clear bright winter sky.  I stood on the deck of the ferry and watched the sunrise through dinosaur-like cranes silhouetted against the sky and felt a sense of prehistoric time in this modern landscape, a sense of scale and awe at the beautiful place I was traveling through.
